In a significant move for the agricultural sector, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met with Union Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in New Delhi on Monday. The discussion revolved around the implementation and expansion of various agricultural schemes related to the state. CM Dhami emphasized the necessity for special cooperation from the Centre to address the unique agricultural needs of Uttarakhand's mountainous and plain regions.

The meeting focused on the comprehensive agricultural development plans prepared by the Uttarakhand government, amounting to approximately ₹3,800 crores. Additionally, the state government proposed establishing 10,000 farm machinery banks with a budget of ₹400 crores to benefit small and marginal farmers, especially women.

The Chief Minister also mentioned the initiative under the State Millet Mission with an allocation of ₹134.89 crores, aimed at promoting traditional nutritious crops. Plans are in place to develop the state as a 'Seed Hub' with an investment of ₹5 crores to ensure self-sufficiency in seed production.
Support for Cash Crops
Further discussions included advancing apple production, enhancing storage, and marketing mechanisms with a proposed budget of ₹1,150 crores. Additional requests for funding amounting to ₹894 crores were made for promoting cash crops, such as kiwifruit, and protecting them from wildlife.
Focus on Innovation and Startups
In a bid to promote innovation in agriculture, a proposed investment of ₹885.10 crores is aimed at supporting startups in the agricultural and horticultural sectors. Plans are also in place to encourage low-risk fruit cultivation, such as dragon fruit, with a budget of ₹42 crores.
Government Initiatives for Value Addition
CM Dhami informed the Union Minister about the state's active role in food processing and value addition. A provision of ₹36.50 crores has been allocated for establishing analysis laboratories to promote organic farming. Additionally, funds of ₹378.50 crores are earmarked for modernizing land records and conducting digital surveys. The government is also investing in training programs through Pantuar University, with allocations of ₹14 crores for youth skill development in the agricultural field.
